Who we are:
The Hasso Plattner Foundation aims to accelerate the adoption of digital technologies through science and education, improve access to art and culture, and support environmental conservation. Hasso Plattner is one of the founders of SAP, an enterprise software company, and has been chairman of its supervisory board since 2003. In 1998, Hasso Plattner founded the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering, marking his first significant philanthropic contribution. After signing the Giving Pledge (initiated by Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffet), he established the foundation in 2015.
We are the Investment Office of the Hasso Plattner Foundation. We have the mandate to generate income and preserve and grow the wealth of the Hasso Plattner Foundation – with the ultimate goal of funding existing and new philanthropic initiatives into perpetuity.
We aim to generate high, risk-adjusted returns and invest capital in global public equities, leveraged buyouts, venture and growth capital, hedge funds and real assets. We invest with trusted external partners and selectively via direct ownership of businesses.
Our investment strategy focuses on long-term equity ownership and risk diversification. The Investment Office seeks out external partners who we believe to be exceptional investors, with entrepreneurial spirit and an ingrained moral compass. We invest to create value for both shareholders and society where environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations are integrated in our investment decisions.
The position is based at the Hasso Plattner Foundation’s main office in Potsdam, Germany.
The Position
We are looking for a dynamic team player for our legal team with in-depth legal and economic understanding. In this role you are exposed to exciting, non-mainstream and alternative legal matters. With your proven legal skills, your commercial acumen, and your willingness to quickly familiarize yourself with new topics, you will be a trusted advisor to our investment team and help taking our legal processes to the next level.
Your Responsibilities
- You will be providing expert and strategic legal advice and guidance especially to our investment team on a wide range of legal matters. Your main tasks include:
- Being in charge of legal due diligence processes for all investments (i.e., public equities, leveraged buyouts, venture and growth capital, hedge funds and real assets)
- Reviewing and advising on agreements with our partners, e.g., banks and trading counterparties
- Ownership for investment related regulatory compliance topics and processes (e.g., SEC filing obligations, MAR compliance)
- Providing clear and actionable legal advice in connection with new and existing investments, also in distressed situations
- Selecting and coordinating outside counsel regarding your assignments
- Legal risk monitoring of our financial assets
- Anticipating issues and estimating risks strategically
- Decision making in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
- Improving the quality and efficiency of our investment related legal processes
Your Experience & Qualifications
- Law degree
- Ideally 3-5 years of professional in-house experience in the financial services sector (e.g., fund manager, asset management business)
- The willingness to deeply understand and support the organization’s investment activities
- Fluency in German and English
- Hands-on approach and a problem-solving mentality
