HPI is recognized as one of the leading university institutes for computer science (www.hpi.de). Our goal is to strengthen Europe's digital sovereignty with excellent research and practice-oriented teaching in computer science. At HPI, we are convinced that excellence is created when knowledge from different disciplines is collaboratively combined to create responsible and pioneering solutions for the future.
In our research clusters "Systems," "Data and AI," "Foundations," "Digital Health," and "Security," researchers from various disciplines work together on topics relevant to solving the challenges facing society. The Digital Engineering Faculty of the University of Potsdam and HPI offers a computer science engineering degree program that is unique in Germany.
In the course of its strong growth, the Hasso Plattner Institute is looking for a
PhD position (m/f/x) - Spatial Analytics and Large-Scale Data Processing
This full-time position is expected to start around October 2025, with flexibility in the start date. The position is limited (with possibility of renewal).
The newly founded Spatial Analytics and Large-Scale Data Processing group at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) invites applications for a PhD position. We seek motivated candidates interested in developing core technologies for cutting-edge systems that drive data-driven decision-making and improve the efficiency of large-scale data analysis. Specific areas of interest include spatial data systems, hardware-accelerated data management, and data management in heterogeneous distributed computing environments. We work on real-world challenges in domains such as earth observation and urban planning, combining data systems research with practical impact. Our results are published in top-tier venues including ACM SIGMOD, VLDB, ACM SIGSPATIAL, and EDBT (see our publications: https://heltzi.github.io/publications.html).
Environment
Join a newly established and ambitious research group that values collaboration, open communication, and a supportive mentoring culture. As part of our team, you'll contribute to building an inclusive and innovative research environment from the ground up.
You will be based at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI), part of the University of Potsdam — one of Germany’s top-ranked institutions for computer science. HPI maintains strong ties with leading international research centers and industry partners, providing a vibrant and well-connected academic network.
Our group is located on the modern Griebnitzsee campus, just a short train ride from Berlin, offering an ideal setting for both focused research and work-life balance. The area combines the best of both worlds: proximity to one of Europe’s most dynamic tech and cultural hubs, and access to nature, lakes, and outdoor activities.
Your Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who are curious, driven, and eager to contribute to cutting-edge research in data systems. You should have:
- A strong academic background with an excellent Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or a closely related field (or close to completing one)
- A passion for research, problem-solving skills, and the motivation to pursue a PhD within approximately four years
- Proficient programming skills in at least one language, such as C++, Python, or similar
- Familiarity with modern data processing tools and concepts, such as relational databases, dataflow systems, or dataframe libraries (e.g., Apache Spark, DuckDB, pandas)
- Experience (or strong interest) in improving the efficiency and scalability of data-centric systems
- Proficiency in English (spoken and written); knowledge of German is not required
- The ability to work independently, take initiative, and contribute creatively to research
- A willingness to participate in teaching and actively engage with students
- An interest in mentoring bachelor’s and master’s students
What we offer
- Be part of a newly established, agile, and ambitious research group where you'll receive close supervision, have regular interaction with your advisor, and play an active role in shaping the group’s research direction
- Highly competitive salaries and full-time employment with social security benefits#
- Generous travel funding for attending top-tier conferences and research visits
- HPI offers a stimulating scientific environment with a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere
- Access to HPI’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and research facilities
- Opportunities to collaborate with industry partners
- Free coffee and tea, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables
- Attractive employee benefits (corporate benefits)
- Subsidized job ticket
- Possibility for mobile working
- Professional development support, such as training on writing grant proposals, teaching, community outreach, and mentoring
- A beautiful, modern campus at Griebnitzsee next to Berlin, which offers a variety of educational, recreational, and cultural opportunities
