HPI is recognized as one of the leading university institutes for computer science (www.hpi.de). Our goal is to strengthen Europe's digital sovereignty with excellent research and practice-oriented teaching in computer science. At HPI, we are convinced that excellence is created when knowledge from different disciplines is collaboratively combined to create responsible and pioneering solutions for the future.
In our research clusters "Systems," "Data and AI," "Foundations," "Digital Health," "Security," and "Business and Society" researchers from various disciplines work together on topics relevant to solving the challenges facing society. The Digital Engineering Faculty of the University of Potsdam and HPI offers a computer science engineering degree program that is unique in Germany.
In the course of its strong growth, the Hasso Plattner Institute is looking for the earliest possible start date for a
Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/x) in Digital Virology and Machine Learning
The position is temporary (3 years with possibility of extension) and full-time.
The Digital Health Cluster research group Digital Virology at the HPI is looking for an excellent and motivated postdoctoral researcher to join under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Eberhard Hildt.
The postdoc will work on the AI-based development and application of methods for modelling virus host interactions. This will involve learning interpretable representations from in vitro and in vivo data describing virus host interactions as kinome, transcriptome and proteome data sets and occurs in tight interaction with the wet lab of the research group of Prof. Hildt investigating virus host interactions experimentally.
The project aims to develop dynamic models for the description of the virus host interaction with respect to -omics profiles. The impact of selective inhibitors on the kinome and transcriptome of infected and non-infected cells will be modelled. The project will initially focus on the hepatitis viruses HBV, HCV, HEV and HDV. This modelling is intended to improve the development of robust antiviral and therapeutic strategies with a broad activity spectrum and reduced side effects.
We are primarily looking for candidates with a strong background machine learning or related data science and profound knowledge in life science. The ideal candidate would also have combined experience in omics technologies, pathway analyses, network analyses and experience working with imaging and health-record data (e.g., UK Biobank).
We highly value scientific independence, creativity, and enthusiasm for the project. Together with the PI, candidates will be involved in coordination of projects and supervision of graduate students and PhD students.
How to apply: The application should include cover letter (in maxium 3 pages describing the research profile of the candidate, the project-specific expertise and a project concept describing modelling of virus host interaction), CV, list of publications, contact information for referees. Documents should be submitted as a single PDF file.
Contract & salary: The position is for a fixed term of 3 years with a possibility of extension.
The salary for the position is oriented on the German collective agreement for public service of the federal states and depends on the candidate’s qualifications. A trial period of 6 months will be applied. The position will be open until filled.
